West Indies departure delayed due to airspace crisis

Date:

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed that the departure of the West Indies senior men’s team from India, following their exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, has been delayed due to international airspace restrictions.

In a statement released on Monday, CWI said the restrictions stem from security threats arising out of military action in the Gulf region, which has disrupted several international flight routes and forced airlines to revise scheduled services for safety reasons.

CWI added that it is working closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC), relevant governmental authorities, and airline partners to arrange the earliest possible safe travel for the squad and support staff.
“The safety and well-being of our players, coaches, and officials remain our highest priority,” the statement said.

The team is currently accommodated in India and remains safe, CWI confirmed, adding that it continues to monitor the situation and will issue further updates once revised travel arrangements are finalised.

CWI also expressed appreciation for the understanding and concern shown by fans, families, and stakeholders during the disruption.

The delay comes after the West Indies exited the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup following a five-wicket loss to India in their final Super Eight match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
