Srinagar, July 14: The residents of Trehgam area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Saturday accused police of thrashing the Women and firing teargas shells on them while they were fetching water from a pond.
The locals alleged that a group of women had gathered in the interiors of Trehgam near Najar Mohalla to fetch water from the pond.
“There was no law and order problem in the area. Suddenly a posse of police arrived and fired teargas shells which led to suffocation of two girls,” they alleged.
“There was no doctor present at that time except the BMO who himself treated upon the duo and later referred them to Kupwara Sub-District hospital for advanced treatment,” Mohammad Akbar Zargar, father of Showkeena told GNS.
Both girls regained consciousness and are now stable, said Mohammad Maqbool Zargar, father of Aamina.
The parents of both the girls demanded action against the police team led by SHO and his PSOs who fired tear smoke shells on women.
Meanwhile, a police officer told GNS that he was present on the spot and termed all the allegations levelled by people against police as baseless.
“The police team was busy clearing the traffic jam in which two ambulances arriving from Kralpora were stranded. The locals had blocked the road,” he said.
He said the police team led by SHO tried to clear the blockade which infuriated the people.
“As the police team tried to remove the blockade, the people including the women started shouting slogans,” the officer said. “Apprehending law and order problem, pepper spray was used and the road was cleared.” (GNS)
