Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Committee on Environment and CPI(M) MLA M. Y. Tarigami on Monday welcomed the Kulgam administration’s enforcement of the ban on single-use plastic and polythene carry bags, urging all Deputy Commissioners to adopt similar measures to make Jammu and Kashmir plastic-free.

Tarigami welcomed the Deputy Commissioner Kulgam’s decision to strictly enforce the ban on single-use plastic and polythene carry bags in the district through a public notice.

The MLA termed the initiative a significant step towards environmental protection and appealed to all Deputy Commissioners and the Jammu & Kashmir administration to adopt similar measures to make the union Territory completely free from single-use plastic.

He recalled that during the Committee on Environment meeting held on June 18, the Committee had urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to issue an executive order imposing a complete ban on single-use plastic across Jammu & Kashmir, emphasizing that coordinated action is essential to safeguard the environment and public health
